For many, the idea of leaving a secure job – particularly one with the perks of an airline – is crazy. But for Luke Zodins, a former aircraft engineer with Qantas, the challenge of running his own business was too enticing. However, Luke also understood the benefits of working for a company with a recognised and respected name. So, when the time came to make a decision, a Jim’s franchise was the logical choice.
Luke already knew someone who was a part of the Jim’s Group and, in consultation with his family, he saw an opportunity to start his own business - with the added bonus of being able to work with, and under an established brand and recognisable logo.
“Having a trade background, and with my brother being a builder, I knew that I wanted to have a business that incorporated my trade skills,” Luke said. “That’s why Jim’s Building Maintenance appealed to me. I could combine my skills with the “Jim’s system” which would take me in the direction that I wanted to go.”
Like most people going into business for themselves for the first time, the idea of not having a regular, sustainable income was a real fear for Luke. So, whilst having confidence in himself and the Jim’s system, Luke simply knuckled down from day one and it wasn’t long before his business was growing and reaching levels that even he didn’t expect to reach so soon.
“I wanted to work for myself, be my own boss and replace the income that I was earning at Qantas,” Luke commented. “However, what I found was that not only did I replace what I was earning, I also found freedom of choice with regards to the type of work I did.”
Coming from a job where he did shift work, Luke felt it was important to set his working hours and restrict when he would work on the weekends. This meant that he not only had structure for his business, it has also meant that he was able to spend more time with his family than when he did when he was working for someone else.
With an encouraging wife and a young family, Luke sees good times ahead both personally and professionally. He hopes his continued success will allow for expansion of his business and time to enjoy his family and personal pursuits such as his boat, fishing, skiing and Oz Tag.
