Grant for Scout’s new home

Much needed $7,000 will assist in rebuilding the roof

The 2nd Gymea Scout Group is one of the largest Scouting Groups in the Southern Metropolitan Region with 60 members aged from 8 to 26, male and female. For 50 years they have operated from the site of St Catherine Laboure Catholic School in Gymea.

Renovations to the school are about to get underway and the Scouting Groups current facilities are needed for classrooms, meaning the group has to find a new home. According to Local Member for Miranda, Barry Collier, the group has set its sights on an old hall in June Place, Gymea – however, it is in need of repair.

The hall has not been used by Shire Scouts for more than 12 years and with a leaky roof, new guttering, doors, fences, repainting and electrical upgrades required, the estimation on costs is about $21,000.

At a meeting of Scout Leaders and parents at the June Place hall on the 3rd August, with Mr Collier and Sport and Recreation Minister, Graham West, a grant of $7,000 was handed to the Scouting Group to assist in rebuilding the roof. The meeting and handing over of the grant coincided with the day that the Scouting Movement celebrated its 100-year anniversary.

Scout Leader-in-Charge, Kay Rae, thanked Mr Collier for his strong support in securing the much needed grant and said that the funds will help them set a fresh path for the Scout Group. She went on to say that the grant will further develop the youth of the shire, bring their headquarters up to scratch, and allow them to accommodate young boys and girls in their own premises.

Mr Collier encouraged everyone to get behind the Scouts and also asked the Sutherland Shire Council to match the State Grant of $7,000 with another $7,000. He said the whole community thanks the Leaders, parents, volunteers and those involved with the group for their contribution to the youth of the shire for the past 50 years and in the year of their anniversary it was the least they could do by securing them the much needed funds.
