Parkes makes his mark in Oceania Championships

Former SLC Aquadot swimmer Stephen Parkes has again picked up gold at the Oceania Championships which this year was held in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The nineteen year old Parkes who recently moved to Brisbane to train under Michael Bohl won the 400m individual medley in 4:30.49 from Kiwis Brett Newall and Bryn Murphy. However in the 200m individual medley Parkes could not match the experienced Kiwi Olympian Dean Kent and picked up a silver. To defeat Parkes Kent broke the championship record. Parkes’ gold and silver matched repeated his performance from the last Oceania Championships in 2006.

The Australian team consisted of young Australian swimmers just outside the Olympic squad with their main rivals being the New Zealand Olympic team.

Overall the young 24 member team pushed the 36 member Kiwi Olympic team all the way to just miss out on the best gold medal tally (NZ 20, Australia 17) but score more overall medals (55 to 46). Story sourced from www.swimming.org.au
