Vanmidde’s ton, unlucky White in Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket
Opener Ben Vanmidde of Illawong Menai’s 16D side was the star with the bat on the first day of the two day round last weekend in Junior Cricket. He scored 122 out of his side’s total of 7/250 against Gymea Bay. Kyle McIntosh was the top wicket taker for Gymea with 3/23 off 6 overs.
In the unluckiest batting performance of the round so far Christian White of Bosco 14C just failed to get a ton after getting run out for 98 against Como Jannali. His side made 9/198 off 50 overs. Adam Hinks was the pick of Como Jannali’s bowlers with 3/7 off 6 overs.
Also just falling just short of a century was Engadine 12A’s Brendan Curtis who was bowled St John Bosco’s Jamie Lightfoot on 92. Lightfoot took 2/10 And Joe Darlington 2/14 in Engadine’s 6/199 off 50 overs.
Max Clement of Caringbah 14D was the pick of the bowlers for the day taking 5/5 off 4 overs to see opponents Engadine dismissed for 72. All round ten matches will be completed on Saturday March 7.

In last weekend’s first round Sutherland Sharks Premier Youth League teams could not notch a win in the 5 games against Manly United at Cromer Park. While the under 14, 15 and 18 teams picked up draws the 13s and 16s were well beaten. The scores for the round were:
Under 13: Sutherland Sharks lost 5 nil
Under 14: Sutherland Sharks drew 1 all
Under 15: Sutherland Sharks drew nil all
Under 16: Sutherland Sharks lost 3 nil
Under 18: Sutherland Sharks drew 2 all
Next weekend’s second round is against Blacktown City played at home at Seymour Shaw Park beginning with the under 13s at 9am on Saturday March 7.

Sutherland provides top NSW referees for NBL Basketball
Basketball referees from Sutherland have featured in the 2008-09 NBL season. Roger Shiels was the top NSW based level 1 referee who officiated in 23 preliminary games in 2008-09 for a total of an amazing 693 in his career so far. He was also selected for the panel for the NBL finals.
Graham Clarke a level 2 referee took part in 14 preliminary round games for a career total of 174 games.

Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) is to again present the annual Shark Island Swim Challenge - one of the premier events on the Ocean Swim calendar.
