by Andrew Connery

Michael Zacharia - an old style Bank Manager

Would like to assist in establishing a Business Progress Association in Menai

How long have you lived in the area?  20 years

Hobbies/Passions?  Golf and helping small business

The hardest thing I’ve ever done:  Was trying to ride a motorbike

Your life/business philosophy:  I believe you are born or acquire certain skills. You should  use them to your advantage and not be afraid to try something new. Always accept change. Don’t stand still and wait for life to catch up

At school:  I enjoyed sport, science, music and history – of course maths and English were the necessary evils

I wish:  For common sense to be used in our laws and by our politicians

I’m good at:  Business advice in regards to cash flow management. I consider myself an old style Bank Manager with good old fashioned ideas in regards to people’s needs from a banking perspective

I’m bad at:  Time management … I’m always trying to please too many people

I often wonder:  What our economy would be like if everybody paid their accounts within 30 days

Describe your business … what makes it different/better:
The Bank of Queensland at Menai is Owner Managed therefore as the manager I have a direct interest in the bank and must look after the customers. We also have experienced staff and a good understanding of local business conditions. I believe every business needs a dedicated Bank Manager.

How long have you worked in the area? I have been with the Bank of Queensland for the past 3 years and previously consulted to business in cash flow management.  I also owned a small business for 15 years following a lengthy career in the banking industry with the ANZ where I spent the first 20 years of my working life

Short term goals? What about 5 years:
I would like to semi retire at the end of 5 years than consult to small business to assist them in better management of cash flow

How long in current business? Over three years with BOQ but 20 years in the profession with ANZ

Your latest project: To make BOQ at Menai one of the Best Business Banks in NSW

What you love about your work?
Meeting my customers and helping them in some way whether it is with friendly advice, financial needs, investments or just answering any enquiries they may have with their accounts

What you would improve about the area/or your work?
I believe Menai has come to a bit of a standstill on the property side and needs some more infrastructure to advance. We need more building blocks and commercial sites. I would like to assist in establishing a Business Progress Association in the area

Who has been a mentor? Any other business influences?
Jack Fraenkel has assisted me greatly and has been a great mentor. Jack is an associate as well as a good business coach and trainer. Ninety per cent of my business has come from my networking with different groups such as the BNI

Has your family/partner been a help?
My wife has always been very supportive and in fact we are celebrating our 36th year of marriage

What business books do you read? Various books but particularly business improvement, motivational texts and biographies

What formal qualifications do you have?
I have Certificates in Management, Financial Health Management, Financial Services and Banking
