Daniel’s company takes on all manner of domestic construction from new homes and first floor additions to bathroom and kitchen renovations. DGS Constructions sets itself apart from competitors by being one of the few building companies to design, manufacture and install stairs without the need to subcontract.
Daniel served his apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery specialising in an area that is considered ‘old school’ – manufacturing and installing stairs. While enjoying the challenges that manufacturing and installing stairs provided, Daniel knew he would eventually move into total construction. Once he completed his carpentry and joinery trade, he set his sights on obtaining his building licence.
Still relatively young, Daniel started subcontracting to other building companies in and around the Shire, providing carpentry and construction services. As he gained more experience and contacts, Daniel started looking to ‘going it alone’ and run his own business; reasoning that he could make his own decisions and work on the projects that he wanted to work on rather than being directed by others.
Offering customers a point of difference
Daniel knew that by having his own company and, given his background in stairs, he could provide a unique range of services and expertise for his customer.
By dealing directly with the customer on all aspects of the job, he also received valuable feedback to gain a better understanding of what the market wanted. He also felt that this would allow him to maintain the high standards he set for himself and his company.
For Daniel, every satisfied customer has brought another to the business and, with an emphasis on providing quality work and broadening horizons, he is now sinking his teeth into larger projects.
Never one to forget where he started, Daniel continues to manufacture stairs for other construction companies as well as doing small jobs such as building office furniture, cabinets and wall units for local businesses and the general public.
Ten years in business has gone fast for Daniel and his wife Kristy but they feel that they now have the perfect work/life balance. While much of Daniel’s time is involved with the business, he does allow himself some time work on restoring his old timber boat, making furniture for around the home and spending time with his wife and daughter.
