Engadine community facilities revitalised
New community facilities and an aged care centre are part of several large scale projects taking place in Engadine at the moment. The projects will be spilt into two stages after two competitive bidding processes, in June this year, for the combined projects failed to unearth a satisfactory tenderer.
Council believe that this makes the project more attractive to aged care providers and will enable them to proceed with the much needed community facilities and then move forward with the construction of the aged care facilities when a suitable tender is selected.
As the current community facilities are ageing, this part of the project is seen as a priority. The new plans include a new public square and a seventy four space underground car park accessible from Caldara Ave.
Another highlight will be a Multi-purpose theatre hall which has been designed with the needs of community groups in mind. The space features a fixed stage area and retractable seating in the rear section.
Care will also be taken to move the existing War Memorial into the new public square, in consultation with Engadine RSL. Mayor David Redmond, said the development will provide long lasting benefits to the community and has been identified as a priority to modernize the Engadine CBD.
Councillor Redmond added that they are working to improve the standard of community facilities for residents now and in the future, with aged care being vital, given the need to provide for the Shire’s ageing population. The development will allow senior citizens to remain in touch with and encourage ongoing interaction with the community.
Councillor Redmond explained that Council has taken as active role with the planning of and provision of aged care facilities within the Shire, resolving also to prepare a comprehensive Ageing Strategy with preparation of a series of discussion papers to promote dialogue between council and the community already begun.
The first of these papers will focus on housing, comparing ageing at home to retirement villages and or aged care facilities. Several other sites are currently being investigated for future aged care development which will increase employment as well as allowing residents to continue to live in the areas they love.
Expression of interests for the Engadine Aged Care Centre will open on 15 October 2007 and close on 26 November 2007. The successful tenderer will be given the flexibility to redesign the centre within the lease footprint offered. A minimum 40 year lease will be offered.
In addition to the Community Facilities and Aged Care Project, several other projects are currently taking place in Engadine including a complete revitalization of Engadine Leisure Centre and the upgrade of Engadine shopping centre. |
