Marketing Mix
by Paul Chad

No more pesky telemarketers

Hopefully – but let’s wait and see!

The Federal Government’s new Do Not Call Register will hopefully go a long way to minimise the volume of telemarketers who have a habit of phoning us just before we sit down to have dinner.

Although I am a professional marketer, I have a dislike for using telemarketing. The practice has been used too much, to the extent most people are against it, and the likelihood of success using telemarketing is rather low. It is also frustrating to see telemarketers clearly not doing their research before they phone people. What logic, for example, is there in a roof renovation company phoning people in a new building subdivision?

A few rules that may be of interest to you:

During the week, telemarketers can only phone between 9am and 8pm (8.30pm for market researchers) or between 9am and 5pm on Saturdays. They cannot phone on Sundays or national public holidays.

Organisations exempt from the Do Not Call Register include charities, political parties, government bodies, religious organisations.

Tax Time Again!

With the end of financial year approaching, it’s not surprising that our letter boxes are being inundated with requests from charities to donate money – so we can claim a tax deduction in a few weeks’ time.

It’s great that individuals as well as organisations donate money to charities but from a charity marketing perspective, leaving it until June to ask people for money, creates a lot of competition amongst charities. The community is likely to only have so much it wishes to donate to charity – do people spread that money amongst say three charities, or give it all to a single charity – a marketing dilemma for charities to sort out!
