Sutherland wins four from six in junior cricket Shields
In the Creak Shield (under 11), Sutherland took on George’s River St George in the local derby. Sutherland won the toss and batted first to compile an impressive 4 for 174 after 50 overs. Best for Sutherland were captain Curtis who top scored with 54, opener Roberts with 47 and fellow opener and wicketkeeper Rae who compiled a handy 20. When their George’s River St George batted, Sutherland’s bowlers were always on top to restrict their opponents to 9 for 92 after 50 overs. As well as two run outs, Sutherland’s bowlers shared the wickets with Heffernan and Grimes each taking two together with Curtis, Grimes and Pavia picking up one each.
Sutherland’s Cawsey Shield (under 12) team had a convincing win over Hawkesbury. Batting first Sutherland scored 6 for 195 after 50 overs, thanks to 65 from captain Grinham, 36 from Wood and 36no from McPhee. When Hawkesbury went into bat its innings began disastrously after Sutherland’s opening bowlers Saunders and Smith each took a wicket to have the side reeling at 2 for none. Despite a fighting 29 by first drop Sammut Hawkesbury lost wickets steadily to be all out for 109 in the 46th over. Sutherland’s bowlers shared the spoils with spinner McPhee taking 3 for 16 from 6 overs, Saunders and Fallins each getting two, while Smith, Williams and Burg took one scalp each. With two wins out of three Sutherland sits in sixth spot on the 20 team table.
In the Gee Shield (under 13), Sutherland’s opponents were Manly Warringah who batted first and were all out for 145 in their 60 overs. For Sutherland, Chamberlain, Shewan and Ellis each took two wickets. When it came Sutherland’s turn to bat, two wickets were lost quickly to have the side in trouble at 2 for 2. Despite a rear guard fight by opener Shewan (40) no other batsman could stay with him for long and Sutherland were all out for 99 in the 48th over to lose the match.
Sutherland’s under 14 team (Moore Shield) took on Manly Warringah in Round 3 at Heathcote. Manly won the toss and decided to bat. Sutherland’s bowlers dominated to have Manly all out for 123 in the 60th over. For Sutherland Hobden, Morton, D’Imerio and Coles-Sinclair each took two wickets. Sutherland passed Manly’s score quite easily in the 48th over for the loss of only two wickets with captain J D’Imperio top scoring with 53no and S Smith with 48. Sutherland now sits in 5th spot on the nineteen team ladder.
In the Weblin Shield (under 15), Penrith 6 for 137 (B Johnson 3 for 23) defeated Sutherland 9 for 135 (B McLean 30, M Henry 22no). In the Watson Shield (under 16), Sutherland 6 for 219 (R Marlow 73no, M Rice 52, C Wright 42) easily accounted for Canterbury Wests all out for 124 with Sutherland spinner M Burg taking 6 for 30 off 10.3 overs. Sutherland’s wicketkeeper Chapman showed his class with three stumpings off spinners Burg and Rice.
Sharks summer holiday basketball camp
The Sutherland basketball Association will be holding a summer basketball camp for juniors aged 6 – 17 from Monday January 21 to Thursday January 24 (last week of school holidays).
