Sharks humble Wildcats

The Sutherland Sharks men's basketball team has maintained its recent stranglehold of dominance against the Parramatta Wildcats, in the Waratah Australian Basketball League (WABL) competition, outclassing their opposition yet again on Saturday night to win 98-77 at the Auburn Basketball Stadium.

Sharks head coach Phil Vannan is blessed with a squad which is laden with players with solid fundamentals of the game, who are prepared to play for the team ahead of personal glory. That factor is in stark contrast to the flashy but mostly erratic Wildcats, who choose to live or die on a blend of frantic, run and gun basketball which relies on outscoring their respective opponent week by week as a very basic game plan.

The Wildcats have subsequently suffered at the hands of the Sharks on a regular basis for the past three seasons and Saturday night was no different, with the Sharks taking control from the opening whistle and never looking likely to offer the Wildcats any opportunity to get into the game.

The home team did however get close in the second half but the Sharks were never troubled, impressively moving back into top gear and humbling the Wildcats with a 21-point victory.

The Sharks women could not emulate their clubmates, falling to the Wildcats 87-56 in the early game.
Former Illawarra Kittyhawks forward Lauren Paterson was a one-woman wrecking crew for the Wildcats, top-scoring with 36 points to lead the home team to an effortless 31-point win.

Women: Parramatta Wildcats 87 (Lauren Paterson 36 points, Sophie Kelman 13) def Sutherland Sharks 56 (Lauren Nicholson 17 points, Holly Martin 11 points & 10 boards)

Men: Sutherland Sharks 98 (Brendon Gleeson 24 points & 13 boards, Blake Hendricks 23 points, Rod Proctor 14, Ben Conguista 13, Petar Cvjeticanin 13) def Parramatta Wildcats 77 (Goran Veg 24 points & 16 boards, Anto Lalic 15 points, John Hennessy 13)

Sharks 13s and 14s remain undefeated in Premier Youth League

Last weekend the Sharks 13s and 14s continued their undefeated runs in soccer’s premier youth league against Macarthur Rams. The 13s had a 3 nil win and after 6 rounds have scored 19 goals and only conceded 4 to clearly top the table.
After the 14s 3 nil win over the Rams, they are only in second spot on the ladder because Blacktown has played an extra mid-week game against the NSW Institute of Sport. The 15s had 3 all draw against the higher placed Rams and are now in 8th spot.
The 16s in 11th place were no match for the Rams going down 5 – 2, while in a bottom of the table clash the Sharks 18s fought hard but ultimately went down 4 - 3
Results of all round 5 games between Sutherland Sharks and Macarthur Rams were:
Under 13: Sutherland won 3 nil
Under 14: Sutherland won 3 nil
Under 15: Sutherland drew 3 all
Under 16: Sutherland lost 5 - 2
Under 18: Sutherland lost 4 - 3

St Patrick’s baseball is Champions of Champions.

Story by by Reece Carter.

The under 17-1’s St. Patricks Baseball side have won the inaugural Champions of Champions Tournament after convincingly defeating Lansvale 18-2 last weekend.

Having claimed the Minor Premiership in the Cronulla-Sutherland Junior Baseball Association (CSJBA) competition, the St Patrick’s side also won back to back Premierships after upstaging the Giants for the second year running.

The knock-out tournament, which was the first of its kind for the Sydney Metropolitan area, was organised by Baseball NSW and showcased an impressive display of baseball over two consecutive weekends at East Hills Baseball Club, Kelso Park.

The first round saw St Patrick’s comfortably defeat Manly’s Forest Baseball Club 9-5. They then survived a scare from a talented Penrith Panthers side in the semi-final to eventually win 6-4, before producing an outstanding performance in the Grand Final.

Made up of eleven extremely talented baseball players, the side will go down as one of the most successful in both the CSJBA and St. Patrick’s long and proud history. They were coached throughout the year by Dale Lincoln and Reece Carter with assistance from Rob Willis. The St Patrick’s under 12-1’s side along with the under 14-1’s Cronulla side were runner’s up in their respective divisions.

Cricket and Soccer Humour - Not Anthony, not Charlie but Lenny!

At a recent Cricket Presentation night former NSW and Australian fast bowler Len Pascoe told of how he was often mistaken for actor, sometime soccer keeper and Sydney FC shareholder Anthony La Paglia or for former Socceroo Charlie Yankos. He actually helped a guy win a bet when he accepted that he was really Charlie Yankos! See the photo below and see what you think.

In part of his speech he recalled some funny statements by Channel 9 commentators.
Ian Healy: “The Pakistani bowlers have got reverse swing going both ways”. Pascoe said in his day that was a straight ball!
Bill Lawry: “He has driven the ball between the gap!”  Pascoe says – in his day between the gaps was where the fielder was!

It’s no wonder Pascoe does not get a gig on Channel 9!
