For a 19-year-old bodyboarder, Shaun Pyne has lived a pretty exciting life thus far. He’s surfed some of the most famous reefs and beaches in the world, from breaks all over Australia to the likes of Hawaii, Fiji and throughout Europe. This is one kid who lives life in top gear- a kid with a passion for life and a passion for bodyboarding.
After his family moved from Canberra to Sydney which he describes as ‘fate’, Shaun has grown up in the Cronulla area and surfed one of the heaviest reef breaks in the world, ‘Shark Island’, since the tender age of 14. Not many grommets of a similar age today have the balls, let alone the skill to tame the east coast’s beast. In recent years, free surfing and local events have bombarded the bodyboarding world with images of the Island’s seemingly flawless barrels. Without fail though, most of these images contain a bodyboarder inside drawing a line and riding the ‘pit’- Shaun is one of these riders and it is with great reason.

“Surfing big waves separates you from the rest of bodyboarders and they require you to boast more skill to ride properly. The bigger the wave, the bigger the air or bigger the pit. Anyone can pull into a 4ft barrel, but not everyone can pull into a 10ft barrel or hit an 8ft section.”
After travelling Europe for a couple of month’s straight last year, Shaun has developed into a talented young athlete who is on the verge of becoming bodyboarding’s next ‘big thing’.
“Surfing beach breaks every day for two months, improved my technical ability dramatically and enhanced my timing and trick book in the big swells. Surfing with good mate Pierre Louis-Costes (France), who is the best young bodyboarder going around Europe at the moment, was also an awesome challenge. We were always pushing each other to the limit, sometimes I’d school him and sometimes he’d school me,”
At the age of 17, Shaun reeled in his first and only sponsor so far in his career, Pride Bodyboards.

“I have been told by other professionals and I believe that I have what it takes to be at the top of the game. My coach Chris Pankhurst used to be a top ironman and train world champion triathletes, so he is training me now both mentally and physically to be the best. I’m really enjoying it.”
In October 2007 during his trip to Europe, Shaun became what was the face of the French Bodyboarding Pro advertising poster and has become popular among his peers. He has been recognised in the number one Bodyboarding Magazine in Australia, ‘Movement’, and is part of the Pride promotional campaign as a star of the “future”.
Having won numerous local competitions throughout his childhood, Shaun now wants to extend that list and focus on the professional scene.

Sydney FC players have returned from their off-season break and will spend four weeks visiting junior football clubs around Sydney as part of the winter Community Program.
Sydney FC players will spend time with the stars of tomorrow all over Sydney as the junior competitions are in full swing. The program will continue until the end of the junior season in August as Sydney FC tries to get to as many of the 650 junior football clubs in the greater Sydney area.
Players will visit clubs from the Southern District, Nepean, St George, Gladesville, Illawarra, Macarthur, Granville, Blacktown, Eastern Suburbs, Manly, Canterbury, Ku-ring-gai, Sutherland and Bankstown Associations in the initial four-week period.
Sydney FC players will attend the Harry Williams Cup, a Football NSW initiative to help promote football amongst the indigenous community, and the Centenary Cup, which is the Football NSW competition for U12 representative teams.
“It’s important that Sydney FC players spend as much time out in the football community as possible,” said Sydney FC CEO Stefan Kamasz. “Sydney FC is a team for the people of Sydney and the junior players are the fans of today and the stars of tomorrow.
“Sydney is a massive area and we are increasing our resources to be able to get out to more clubs, associations and players and this is the start of a targeted approach to further engaging the people of Sydney.
“We are working hard with Football NSW to make sure we can reach out to the junior players, some of whom are already Sydney FC fans and others who have yet to be reached.”
