Shock results as Sharks take on APIA

In last weekend’s Premier Youth League soccer games between Sutherland Sharks and APIA Leichhardt Tigers, there were two shock results.

Firstly, the table leading Sharks 14s could only manage a 2 all draw against the 9th placed Tigers. Later on in the day, the Sharks 16s (10th spot) avenged their younger team mates by defeating the second placed Tigers 2 – 1.

The table leading 13s ultimately prevailed by 1 nil over Apia (7th) in a hard fought match. In the other games (15s & 18s) APIA’s top four placed teams were too strong for the Sharks teams who are well down the ladder.

Full results for last weekend’s games against Apia Leichhardt Tigers were:

Under 18: APIA 4 Sharks 3
Under 16: APIA 1 Sharks 2
Under 15: APIA 1 Sharks nil
Under 14: APIA 2 Sharks 2
Under 13: APIA 0 Sharks 1

Sutherland Sharks Men 106 defeated Norths Bears 83

Saturday night the Sharks hosted the North Sydney Bears in the Waratah Australian Basketball League as they tried to establish some momentum in their season. With the Bears holding the higher position on the table the Sharks drove full force into the game and never looked back.

Leading by 11 going into the second the Sharks hit turbo and pushed the lead out to 28 by half time.

The stars were the usually suspects with BJ Carter (23 pts) and Blake Henricks (19 pts) doing what they do and Ben Conguista leaving his mark on the game (20pts) as the second half saw the Sharks bench hit the court and carry the game.

While the lead did contract at times during the second half, there was never any real danger as the bench showed the team’s depth with special tribute to Darren O’Shae who made great use of his time scoring 8 pts in 4 minutes to help the Sharks close the game out 106 to 83. The Sharks are now in fourth spot on the ladder.

Sutherland Sharks Women 79 defeated Norths Bears 55

Sutherland Sharks were ready to play, and needed a win in front of their home crowd. Sharks got to an early lead, which they kept for the entire game.

The final result, Sharks winning by 24 points. Marianna Tolo was too hard for Norths to handle in the paint.

The Sharks came out in the third quarter with a fantastic start and a ten point lead at half time soon became a twenty point lead.

All players contributed to the fantastic win and were well supported by a terrific crowd. Top Scorers were Marianna Tolo 21, Billy Stevens 14 and Lauren Nicholson 10

Sydney FC to play Sutherland Sharks

Sydney FC will start its 2008/09 preparations with three trial matches against NSW Premier League clubs, Blacktown City at Gabbie Stadium (Seven Hills), Sutherland Sharks at Seymour Shaw (Miranda) and Manly United at Cromer Park (Dee Why).

The matches will be hosted by the NSW Premier League clubs with gate receipts going back into the local football club with Sydney FC also supporting the promotion of the matches through targeted marketing and promotional programs leading into the game.

“Manly, Sutherland and Blacktown are very strong junior football areas with NSW Premier League sides so not only will they give John Kosmina and the team good opposition they also allow us to spread the games out evenly across Sydney.”

On the pitch, Sydney FC will get some strong hit outs in the trial matches with the Sutherland Sharks and Manly United sitting first and second on the NSW Premier League table.

Coach John Kosmina will be using the games to begin the process of integrating the new players into the side in the lead up to the opening Hyundai A-League game of the season against Melbourne Victory at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday 16 August.

Sydney FC has built up well in the off season with John Aloisi, Simon Colosimo, Mark Bridge, Stuart Musialik and Mitchell Prentice joining the club.

“We have some new players to the club, some very good players, and they need to integrate into the framework of the team as best as possible before the A-League season starts,” Kosmina said. “These games will help them do that before we get into the Pre Season Cup and then the A-League.

“I’ve said all along that it’s important for Sydney FC to become more Community-based and taking the team to the south, north and west to play games against Sutherland, Manly and Blacktown is important for the club.”

Sydney FC plays Sutherland Sharks at Seymour Shaw Park, Miranda from 7pm on Wednesday 2nd July.
