The Sutherland Sharks under 14 women’s basketball team has qualified for the 2009 Australian under 14 Girls Club Championships. The Championships will be held in Perth, WA from 28 September to 3 October. These will be hosted by Basketball WA at Perry Lakes Basketball Stadium, Meagher Drive, Floreat, WA.

The results of the qualifying games for the under 14 women in NSW were:

Sutherland Sharks 61 (Madeleine Cox 12, Gabrielle Turnbull 12, Ceara Leavai 5) defeated Newcastle Hunters 41 (Meiling Patfield 26, Sophie Gaurdon 7, Cassandra Janson 4)

Hills Hornets 38 (Taylor Johnston 11, Britnee Sewell 8, Zoey Burke 7) defeated Illawarra Hawks 31 (Paige Phillips 9, Kate Hewett7, Eleri Morris 5)

Sutherland Sharks basketball women have strong finish

The Sutherland Sharks Waratah Basketball team finished its competition on a high last weekend. In its first game of a double header the 9th placed Sharks took on the 10th team Parramatta Wildcats and jumped out to an early lead by 28 – 15 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats could not bridge the gap and the Sharks ran out winners by 76 – 51. Top scorers for the Sharks were Jacki Nicholson (14), Merle Hall (13), Melinda Bartlett (12) and Lauren Nicholson (12) while Amanda Ford (23) dominated the points for the Wildcats.

In their second game of the weekend the Sharks women had to face the 4th placed Norths Bears and were not expected to get close in the match. After the Bears jumped away to a 24-15 lead in the first quarter, it seemed as though the Sharks were going to have a very tough day. However the Sharks won each of the next three quarters to see the match tied 62-62 at the end of the 4th quarter.  In extra time the Bears just edged out the Sharks by 12 – 11 to take the match 74 – 73.

Norths Bears 74 (Tanya Smith 34) defeated Sutherland Sharks 73 (Jacki Nicholson 22, Peta Kneen 12, Courtney Dean 12, Melinda Bartlett 10)

The Sharks WABL men’s team loss to second placed Parramatta Wildcats at the Sutherland Basketball Stadium last Saturday finally shut the door on their hopes of defending their premiership title.

The Wildcats led by 52 – 48 at half time and in a high scoring third quarter the Sharks pegged back two points to trail by 85 – 83.   However, the Wildcats effortlessly stepped up a gear in money-time, shutting down the Sharks offence and racing away for a commanding 20-point win by 123 to 103. The Sharks finished in 8th spot with 6 wins and 12 losses.

Parramatta Wildcats 123 (Stephan Blaszcynski 30, Goran Veg 25, Graeme Dann 21) defeated Sutherland Sharks 103 (Rod Proctor 30, Blake Henricks 20, Steven Hall 13)

Sutherland to host state basketball finals on August 8 - 9

Basketball NSW has announced that the Sutherland Basketball Association has been selected as this year's host of the 2009 Waratah ACC and NSW State League finals on the weekend of 8th - 9th of August.

Sutherland Basketball Association hosted the Premier Event on the Basketball NSW's calendar two years ago with great success and is looking forward to once again showcasing a professionally managed and memorable event for players, coaches, officials and supporters.

The weekend sees the conclusion of the season, with semi-finals on the Saturday and the grand finals on Sunday. The grades include men and women grades of Waratah ABL, State League and Youth League.

Bonnyrigg teams shock Sutherland in PYL soccer

Sutherland Sharks’ Premier Youth League fans expected a better outcome for their road trip against Bonnyrigg White Eagles last weekend. The Sharks’ under 18s (currently 5th) were expected to prevail over the 11th team but Bonnyrigg ran out easy winners by 3 nil. Also in the under 15s the Sharks currently running in 5th were expected to dominate 12th placed Bonnyrigg. But in another major shock the Sharks had to settle for a 3 all draw. As expected the second placed Sharks under 14s were far too strong for their bottom placed opponents and won 3 nil.

After the round the Sharks have three teams in the top five (14, 15 and 18s) with the 13s in 9th and 16s in 10th seemingly out of play-off contention.

Results for the round 20 played last weekend against Bonnyrigg White Eagles were:
Under 13: Sutherland won 2 - 1
Under 14: Sutherland won 3 nil
Under 15: Sutherland drew 3 all
Under 16: Sutherland drew 1 all
Under 18: Sutherland lost 3 nil

The next round of the Premier Youth League is to be played from Saturday 1st August. The Sutherland Sharks teams will be taking on Sydney Olympic at Seymour Shaw Park beginning with the under 13s at 9am.
